Custom software and technical consulting

Technology built around the way your business actually works.

I help businesses turn operational problems into practical technical solutions. That can mean building custom software, connecting existing systems, automating repetitive work, or helping define the right approach before development begins.

Strategy, development, integration, and ongoing technical support, all through one point of contact.

Consulting that stays close to the work.

Many technical projects become harder than they need to be because the person gathering requirements is disconnected from the person doing the implementation.

At Schultz Consulting, I work directly with clients throughout the process. I learn how the current workflow operates, help determine what should change, and stay hands-on while the solution is designed, built, tested, and launched.

The result is a more direct process, clearer communication, and fewer details lost between planning and development.

Technical help shaped around the actual problem.

Not every business needs a new platform, and not every inefficient process needs AI. The first step is understanding what is happening now, what is getting in the way, and what kind of solution is justified.

  1. 01

    Technical Discovery & Strategy

Before building anything, I help define the problem clearly: reviewing the current workflow, gathering requirements, identifying constraints, comparing approaches, and creating a realistic plan for implementation.

    • Requirements gathering
    • Process analysis
    • Technical architecture
    • Project scoping
    • Platform evaluation
    • Implementation roadmaps
  2. 02

    Custom Software Development

When existing tools cannot support the workflow, I design and build software around the business need, from internal tools and dashboards to portals, web applications, and the systems behind them.

    • Full-stack web apps
    • Internal tools
    • Customer & staff portals
    • APIs
    • Relational databases
    • Payments & subscriptions
  3. 03

    Automation & AI-Enabled Workflows

Repetitive work can often be reduced without replacing the people who understand the process. AI may be part of the solution when it provides a clear benefit, but it is never added simply for marketing value.

    • Task automation
    • Document processing
    • Knowledge retrieval
    • Human-review workflows
    • AI feasibility review
    • Workflow orchestration
  4. 04

    Systems Integration

Businesses often rely on several tools that were never designed to work together. I build and improve integrations so information moves more reliably through the organization.

    • Third-party APIs
    • Data synchronization
    • Authentication
    • Payment integration
    • Legacy improvement
    • Platform migration
  5. 05

    Troubleshooting & Technical Improvement

Some clients do not need a new system. They need help understanding why an existing one is unreliable or hard to maintain. I review the application, find the source of the problem, and implement targeted changes.

    • Application troubleshooting
    • Production investigation
    • Performance work
    • Technical debt review
    • Deployment support
    • Maintenance planning

A clear process from first conversation to launch.

The process is collaborative, but it is not complicated for the sake of appearing formal. Each engagement is adjusted to the size of the problem and the amount of uncertainty involved.

Step 1

Understand

We start with how the work is handled today: the people involved, the current tools, the pain points, the exceptions, and the outcome the business is trying to reach.

Step 2

Define

Once the problem is clear, I translate it into requirements and recommend an approach, deciding what belongs in the first version and whether custom work is even the right answer.

Step 3

Build

Development happens in focused, reviewable stages. I communicate progress, explain important decisions, raise risks early, and use feedback to keep the work aligned with the real need.

Step 4

Launch & Improve

After testing, the solution is deployed and documented. I can continue supporting the system and improving it as the business learns from real use.

Examples of problems I like to solve.

The Turf Manager

Full-stack platform

A full-stack web platform built to support service-based business operations through one centralized system, spanning customer-facing and internal workflows, authentication, and subscription and payment functionality.

My role: product and workflow planning, full-stack development, database design, payment integration, deployment.

  • Next.js
  • React
  • TypeScript
  • PostgreSQL
  • Clerk
  • Stripe
  • Tailwind
  • Supabase

FishScan

Concept in development

A concept for a mobile fishing app that uses camera data to help document a catch, combining image capture, species identification, physical measurement, and catch records, with research toward a three-dimensional representation of the fish.

My role: product definition, feasibility analysis, computer-vision planning, data-model and architecture design.

  • Computer vision
  • Depth sensing
  • Mobile architecture

CollaborAITE

Prototype

A collaborative workspace prototype designed to help groups use AI while keeping clearer policies, accountability, and records of how AI is used, including group spaces, usage journaling, instructor visibility, and export functionality.

My role: requirements, interface development, AI-policy workflow design, role-based UX.

  • React
  • TypeScript
  • Vite

Client Websites & Web Systems

Client-facing work

Worked directly with clients to translate goals, content, and operational requirements into maintainable websites and web-based solutions, from choosing the right platform to building, launching, and supporting the finished product.

My role: discovery, requirements, front-end and back-end development, CMS setup, deployment, maintenance.

  • React
  • Django
  • Python
  • WordPress
  • C# / .NET

Some of the projects above are still concepts or prototypes and are labeled as such. I would rather be accurate about where a project stands than overstate it.

Direct technical support from someone who can also build the solution.

Josh Schultz

Founder & Technical Solutions Consultant

I'm Josh Schultz, the founder of Schultz Consulting.

My background is in software development, technical problem-solving, and working directly with clients to turn ideas and operational needs into functional systems.

I started Schultz Consulting to focus on the part of technical work I enjoy most: understanding how a problem works in the real world, helping determine the right approach, and staying involved long enough to make the solution useful.

I don't believe every company needs a complicated platform or an AI product. Sometimes the right answer is a focused internal tool, a reliable integration, a better workflow, or a clear technical plan. The goal is to recommend and build what actually fits.

A good fit for organizations that need a hands-on technical partner.

  • A manual process has become difficult to manage.
  • Important information is spread across several systems.
  • Existing software no longer matches the workflow.
  • A custom internal tool is needed.
  • A team wants to automate repetitive work.
  • You're considering AI but want an honest feasibility assessment.
  • A software project needs clearer requirements or direction.
  • An existing application is unreliable or hard to maintain.

A few things people usually ask.

What types of projects do you take on?

Custom web applications, internal tools, workflow automation, integrations, technical discovery, troubleshooting, and modernization of existing systems.

Do you only work on AI projects?

No. AI is one tool among many. It's only recommended when it provides a real advantage for the workflow or product.

Can you help before we know exactly what to build?

Yes. Many engagements begin with discovery, workflow analysis, and technical planning rather than a finalized specification.

Can you improve an existing application?

Yes. That can include troubleshooting, codebase review, integrations, performance improvement, feature development, and modernization.

What technologies do you use?

Technology is chosen based on the problem and the existing environment. Experience includes React, Next.js, TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Django, C#, .NET, PostgreSQL, WordPress, PHP, APIs, authentication, payment integrations, and modern deployment platforms.

Do you work with small businesses?

Yes. Schultz Consulting is especially well suited to small and midsize organizations that need direct access to a hands-on technical consultant.

Tell me what you are trying to improve.

You don't need to arrive with a finished technical specification. Start with the process, problem, or idea. I can help clarify the requirements, determine whether a technical solution makes sense, and identify a practical next step.
